Pontiacs Hold Ground to Overtake Drumheller

The Bonnyville Jr A Pontiacs’ Saturday night game was what hockey fans could only describe as a “Gongshow”. A game that was out-of-control from the start ended with both visiting Drumheller Dragons’ coach being ejected, resulting in the refs calling the game at a 7-2 win for the Pontiacs.

“They came into our barn and thought they were gonna run us outta the rink,” explains Assistant Coach Larry Draper, “they got into penalty trouble, and we put some in the back of the net. Have at ‘er, these kids, our team, may not be the biggest, but we have a lot of character. They’re fit, fast, and they’re not gonna back down or give their game away.”

“Bottom line is, they tried to bully us and it didn’t happen, we pushed back.” The third period full of fights, resulting in nine 10 minute game misconduct calls. One of these calls didn’t sit well with Drumheller’s Assistant  Coach, Galvin Halcomb, was the first to be ejected from a game after questioning a call, regarding a fight, which got out of hand. Coach of the Dragons, Brian Curran, was ejected soon after resulting in the refs calling the game.

It was a rough game regardless, explains Draper, “our guys played very well, played the game the right way and did a good job against them. Now, we look forward to playing the Spruce Grove Saints tonight.” The Saints, who are the defending AJHL Champs, have been a trickier team for the Pontiacs so far this season. But, that won’t deter the Yaks spirits, says Draper, “sooner or later our guys will figure it out because they’re a smart group with lots of grit. We’ll play them hard tonight.”

Home game at the RJ Lalonde, 7:30 pm puck drop, with the crowd behind them Draper says he “has a feeling it’ll be a good outcome tonight.” There’ll be a few shake ups to the line up, Josh Borynec is out (7-10 days) with a sprained ankle and Ryan Symington is not expected to dress for personal reasons.
